About the Book

In another world, another story of Kimhan…

Kimhan is a boy unlike other boys, and he has just lost his mother.

No one can make him understand what death is. To Kimhan, his mother hasn't ended. She has only gone somewhere he can't follow yet. So he sets out to find her, whatever it takes. He tries to wake the dead. He disrupts the village's sacred offering to the spirits. He breaks every rule the grown-ups are too afraid to break.

Because if his mother has become a ghost, then the world of ghosts is the only place left where he can find her.

Inside the Book

Before You Enter Khok Phi Lok
There is no need to stretch this out like the rubber-band ropes children knot together, link by link, for a game of skipping. Let me put it as plainly as I can: the novel Khok Phi Lok is cinema through and through — a picture made for the giant screen — far more than anything as slight as a rubber band, or even a slingshot.
What makes this novel special is simply this: it is anything but ordinary.
Be that as it may… the final page, where moonlight breaks through the clouds and spills across the paper, will shine its light upon the ending and reveal a meaning that has lain hidden between the lines all along. Knowing that, whatever you do — don't steal a glance at the last page first.
I confess I did exactly that with the manuscript. And having peeked, I found myself holding my breath for more. I long to see this novel on the silver screen — with Thawilha Films, perhaps, or with Add Thewada — and, should fortune allow, on Netflix, so that our author may go on doing what he loves and what he does best.
Yet even if opportunity is no more than the guttering flame of an oil lamp, dimmed by the many forces of our modern world, I remain certain of one thing: there is still air enough for this novel to breathe in the world of books.
"Spellbinding, sorrowful, and spine-chilling."
That is the praise I, as editor, wish to bestow upon Kaew Nikhom — known among film directors as Sartthar Tharchai — who has written his first novel with his life, his soul, and the tip of his pen.
To write something complex so that it reads with ease, with the cinematic cunning of a story whose turns we never see coming, is no simple feat. And simplicity here does not mean that beneath the flesh of this novel there is no bone — no marrow for interpreters to gnaw on, to turn over and wrestle with, word by word.
On the contrary. The tale that unfolds in a once-upon-a-time village carries a mirror to society, laced with satire aimed at those who wield their power against the little children of the land — powers both dark and shades of grey — amid the haze and smoke that shroud the villagers of Khok Phi Lok. It left me shaken, stirred, and moved to the very core…
No spoilers. None at all.
You are invited to savor the goosebumps and the shivers racing down your spine as you please. If your heart is not quite made of steel, I suggest wearing a Buddha amulet around your neck as you read. A word of caution, though: an amulet, mind you — not a Buddha statue. Hang one of those around your neck, and your head may droop before you reach the end…
